GoalSense Weekend: Europe's remarkable goal streaks and the numbers to watch — GoalSense Insights

There are some extraordinary scoring runs heading into this weekend's football.

Porto have found the net in at least 33 consecutive league matches. Manchester City have scored in at least 21. And in Germany, FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt have both seen both teams score in every one of their last 10 league games.

But not every trend points towards goals.

In Scotland, Stenhousemuir have conceded just twice in their last 10 matches, while Dunfermline haven't played a league game containing more than two goals across the same period.

Across the 196 remaining fixtures in the GoalSense weekend window, there are plenty of stories behind the numbers.

Here are six worth following.

This preview covers Saturday 10 to Monday 12 October, excluding Friday's fixtures. Recent last-10 records are league matches and often extend into last season. Streaks are minimum lengths recorded in GoalSense's available history since June 2025. All fixtures currently carry lower-confidence flags because of early-season sample sizes. Historical trends are evidence, not guarantees.

1. Köln and Frankfurt: when both teams just keep scoring

Few teams in Europe's major leagues have been involved in more consistently two-sided scoring matches recently than FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Both teams have scored in each of Köln's last 10 league matches, with that run stretching to at least 14 consecutive games.

Koln have also conceded in at least 18 straight league matches.

Sunday's opponents Borussia Mönchengladbach bring their own defensive concerns, having conceded 12 goals in their last five away league matches, while scoring just once.

Köln v Gladbach carries a GoalSense Matchup Score of 93 and Over 2.5 potential of 97.

Frankfurt's numbers are similarly striking.

Both teams have scored in all of their last 10 league matches, extending a run of at least 12 consecutive BTTS results.

They visit RB Leipzig on Saturday, with the fixture carrying a Matchup Score of 94 and Over 2.5 potential of 98.

Two different Bundesliga fixtures, but a very similar historical pattern: teams that have been scoring and conceding with remarkable regularity.

2. The Eredivisie leads the weekend ratings

Across the 196 remaining fixtures, the Eredivisie has the highest average GoalSense Matchup Score of any competition: 94.0 across eight matches.

And one fixture stands above everything else.

Excelsior v FC Groningen carries a Matchup Score of 97, the highest in the entire remaining weekend window.

Excelsior have scored in at least 12 consecutive league matches, while nine of their last 10 contained three or more goals.

Groningen have scored and conceded in nine of their last 10 and recorded BTTS in eight.

Another standout is Go Ahead Eagles v Sparta Rotterdam, with a Matchup Score of 96.

Go Ahead Eagles have seen both teams score in each of their last 10 league matches, scoring 20 and conceding 22.

Sparta have conceded in at least 12 consecutive matches, with nine of their last 10 containing three or more goals.

Those numbers help explain why the Dutch league is so prominent in this weekend's GoalSense ratings.

The ratings aren't percentages or guarantees of an outcome. They provide a way of identifying where the strongest pre-match goal evidence is concentrated.

3. Porto's 33-match scoring run — and Benfica's goal-heavy streak

Portugal provides two of the weekend's longest attacking trends.

Porto travel to Marítimo having scored in at least 33 consecutive league matches.

That's the longest active scoring run among the teams in the eligible GoalSense weekend fixtures.

But Porto aren't simply a team associated with open, high-scoring matches.

They've also kept six clean sheets in their last 10 league games, conceding just six goals across that period.

Their recent BTTS rate is only four in 10.

It's an important distinction: scoring consistently doesn't necessarily mean both teams are regularly finding the net.

Benfica offer a different pattern.

Their last 12 consecutive league matches have contained at least three goals, and they've scored in at least 21 straight.

They host Vitória Guimarães on Sunday.

Vitória have scored just six goals and conceded 16 across their last 10 league matches.

Interestingly, their current-season expected-goals figures are stronger than those results might suggest: 1.80 xG for and 0.84 xGA per match across seven games.

Those xG figures are separate supporting context, not part of the GoalSense Rating.

Porto's consistency and Benfica's goal-heavy results tell two different stories about how attacking trends can develop.

4. Scotland provides the defensive counter-story

While much of the weekend's attention is on scoring streaks, the Scottish Championship tells a very different story.

Its five eligible fixtures average a GoalSense Matchup Score of 70.6, the lowest of any competition in the remaining weekend window.

Stenhousemuir are a particularly striking example.

They have kept eight clean sheets in their last 10 league matches, conceding just two goals.

Only one of those 10 matches contained three or more goals.

They travel to Inverness on Saturday with a GoalSense Matchup Score of 73.

Elsewhere, Dunfermline have gone 10 consecutive league matches without a game containing more than two goals.

They've scored eight and conceded six across those 10 matches, keeping six clean sheets.

Their opponents Ayr United have seen only two of their own last 10 league matches contain three or more goals.

Ayr v Dunfermline has an Over 2.5 potential of 69, well below the weekend's leading goal-heavy fixtures.

Sometimes the most interesting trend is how effectively teams have been keeping goals out.

5. Preston, Chelsea and Burnley: the other side of the scoring story

Scoring streaks tend to attract attention, but some of the weekend's longest runs involve teams repeatedly conceding.

Preston North End have conceded in at least 23 consecutive league matches.

They haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their last 10, conceding 20 goals across that period.

Saturday's Championship opponents Millwall have seen their last seven league matches contain at least three goals.

Chelsea's defensive run is almost as striking.

They've conceded in at least 21 consecutive league matches, with nine of their last 10 containing three or more goals.

They host Bournemouth on Saturday, with a GoalSense Matchup Score of 87.

And then there's Burnley.

They travel to Watford having gone at least 20 league matches without a win.

Burnley have conceded in at least 16 consecutive league matches, while Watford have conceded in at least 15.

That combination helps explain why Watford v Burnley carries a BTTS potential of 92, despite its lower Over 2.5 potential of 85.

These are different types of struggles, but they underline why goals conceded can be just as revealing as goals scored.

6. Liverpool v Manchester City: two streaks collide

Sunday's Liverpool v Manchester City fixture provides one of the weekend's clearest examples of conflicting evidence.

Manchester City have scored in at least 21 consecutive league matches.

Across their last 10, they've scored 24 goals and conceded 11.

Liverpool, however, arrive having kept three consecutive clean sheets.

They are also unbeaten in six league matches.

The current-season xG numbers add some context.

City are averaging 2.00 xG for and 1.11 xGA per match.

Liverpool's corresponding figures are 1.84 xG and 1.32 xGA.

Those figures cover just five league matches each this season, so the sample is still small.

The fixture has a GoalSense Matchup Score of 84, lower than many of the weekend's less prominent matches.

And that's what makes it interesting.

One team arrives with a long scoring streak. The other arrives with a short but impressive run of clean sheets.

Both records are real. They can't both continue unchanged if City score.

The weekend at a glance

There are 196 fixtures remaining across 21 competitions in the current GoalSense Hot Matchups weekend window.

Of those, 55 have a Matchup Score of 90 or higher.

Six teams have recorded BTTS in all of their last 10 league matches: Köln, Frankfurt, Go Ahead Eagles, Barnet, Leek Town and Southend.

Only two teams have seen all of their last 10 league matches contain three or more goals: Union Berlin and Benfica.

At the opposite end, Dunfermline haven't had a single Over 2.5 result across their last 10.

Some streaks will continue. Others will end.

That's what makes the weekend interesting.
