Weekend in Numbers: Perfect Goal Accas, 583 Goals and an Eight-Goal Thriller

GoalSense reviews the final weekend before the international break: two perfect goal accas, 583 goals across 202 matches, a Championship goal-fest and some remarkable xG performances.

The final domestic weekend before the international break delivered goals — and plenty of them.

Across 202 completed fixtures in the GoalSense weekend window, there were 583 goals at an average of 2.89 per match.

Both teams scored in 61.9% of games, 55.9% went Over 2.5 and almost four in five — 79.2% — produced at least two goals.

And it was a particularly good weekend for the first published GoalSense Weekend Acca selections.

Two perfect GoalSense goal accas

The Over 2.5 Five landed 5/5, with all five selected fixtures producing at least three goals.

Werder Bremen 3–2 Augsburg, Bayern Munich 7–0 Union Berlin, Brentford 3–0 Chelsea, Dumbarton 3–2 The Spartans and Monaco 3–2 Lens all delivered.

The Over 1.5 Ten went one better: 10/10.

Every selected fixture produced at least two goals, including Espanyol's 4–3 win over Elche and Manchester City Women's 4–2 victory over Liverpool Women.

The BTTS Five finished 3/5. Interestingly, both misses were still comfortable Over 2.5 winners: Brentford beat Chelsea 3–0 and Groningen beat PEC Zwolle 3–0.

Across all three coupons, that meant 18 of the 20 published selections landed.

Eight goals at the Etihad

No game across the GoalSense weekend produced more goals than Machester City's 5–3 win over Sunderland.

Its eight goals topped a weekend containing seven-goal matches in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Championship, National League, Eerste Divisie, Ligue 2 and WSL.

Bayern Munich supplied one of the most emphatic results, beating Union Berlin 7–0, while Southend scored six away from home in a 6–1 victory at Gateshead.

Norwich and Bolton also served up seven in the Championship, with Bolton coming away with a 4–3 win.

The Championship couldn't stop scoring

There was a remarkable contrast between two levels of the EFL.

The Championship produced 40 goals from 12 fixtures, averaging 3.33 per match.

Both teams scored in 10 of the 12 games, while nine went Over 2.5.

League Two went completely the other way.

Its 12 matches produced only 21 goals — 1.75 per game. Four finished 0–0, meaning a third of all the weekend's goalless draws came from League Two alone. Only two of its 12 fixtures went Over 2.5.

At the top of the overall scoring table was the Bundesliga, where 33 goals across nine matches produced an average of 3.67 per game.

When seven goals come from three xG

Now that GoalSense's xG coverage is fully up to date, we can also look underneath some of the weekend's scorelines.

Bayern's 7–0 win was considerably more clinical than the scoreline alone suggests. The match produced approximately 3.18 total xG.

RKC Waalwijk's 6–1 win over MVV Maastricht was even more extreme: seven actual goals from 2.79 combined xG.

Other high-scoring matches had underlying chance numbers much closer to the final score.

Borussia Mönchengladbach's 3–4 defeat to Mainz generated 5.94 xG, while Twente's 3–2 win over PSV produced 4.84 xG. In those games, the chance data largely backed up what appeared on the scoreboard.

Huddersfield create — but still don't score

One result also continued a theme we identified in our latest EFL xG analysis.

Huddersfield generated 3.41 xG away at Bromley without scoring — the biggest single-team scoring underperformance in GoalSense's weekend xG data.

That's particularly striking because Huddersfield already have some of League One's strongest underlying xG numbers while scoring fewer goals than their chances suggest.

It is exactly the sort of gap we'll be watching as the sample grows.

Not everything followed the numbers

This was also a reminder that strong historical goal data doesn't guarantee a high-scoring match.

Six of the higher-rated Hot Matchups produced low-scoring outcomes, including Stuttgart 0–1 Dortmund, Leverkusen 2–0 Leipzig and Celtic 0–1 Rangers.

The Old Firm fixture carried a GoalSense Match Up Score of 91 and an Over 2.5 potential of 92, but Rangers' solitary goal settled it.

Across all 148 published Hot Matchups, Over 1.5 landed in 77.0%, BTTS in 56.8% and Over 2.5 in 52.0%.

A weekend of 583 goals

So the final weekend before the break leaves us with some fairly extraordinary numbers:

202 matches. 583 goals. Two perfect GoalSense goal accas. An eight-goal Premier League game. 40 Championship goals. And plenty of underlying xG stories that the scorelines alone don't reveal.

Domestic football now pauses, but the opening weeks have given us a much bigger sample to investigate.
